New Releases: Tons of new releases this week on Comic Station. Reality Check #1 from Image Comics,Batman Black and White #1 and Forever Evil #1 both from DC Comics, God is Dead #1 from Avatar Press,The Star Wars #1 from Dark Horse Comics, (breathe) and X-Men Battle of the Atom #1 from Marvel.

Review: Lido covers us again for Comic Station with Station to Station #1, King Conan: Hour of the Dragon #3, Catalyst Comix #3, and Baltimore: The Infernal Train #1 all from Dark Horse Comics.

Special: No Recommendation this week on Comic Station because we are trying something new [insert gasp here]. We’ve added a special scrolling ticker at the bottom of the screen in the Reviews section that recounts Twitter-size reviews of comics we couldn’t write full reviews for from the previous week’s release. Comic Station Issue #34 – Aug 21st 2013

We at Comic Station try to highlight new releases and other series many might otherwise overlook. We typically don’t report on long-standing series unless revolutionary. We add a little something extra in our Reviews and Recommendation section.

New Releases: Realm Knights #1 from Zenescope starts off this issue of Comic Station by pulling characters from across the Nexus to form a team of heroes to fight threats greater than they could handle alone. Valiant releases Bloodshot #0 to fill in some of the background on their “perfect soldier”. Penny for your Soul: Death #1 from Big Dog Ink continues the tale of the Devils grand-daughter and the balance between Heaven, Hell, and herself. Batman Beyond Universe #1 creates a good jumping on point for new readers, but with plenty of differences since the cartoon trailed behind the comic series.

Review: Lots of reviews this week on Comic Station. Tom Strong and the Planet of Peril #1 from Vertigo Comics. Infinity #1 from Marvel Comics. Watson and Holmes #2 from New Paradigm Studios. Last but not least, Will Eisner’s Fagin the Jew from Dark Horse Comics.

Recommendation: We’ve looked at individual issues on previous Comic Station videos, but Scott recommends the whole Trinity Wars saga from DC Comics.

SDCC 2013: San Diego Comic Con News Round-Up

If you’re not aware, last week there was a little gathering of people from the wide-world-of-comics in San Diego. For those unfamiliar, the San Diego Comic Con (SDCC of short) is a yearly event that has grown exponentially in size and importance since 145 people in 1970 to over 130,000 attendees in 2012. From comic books the show has expanded to include video games, movies and television, attracting big announcements and stars from these industries. Some argue that SDCC has outpaced its comic book roots, but there is no denying the importance of this event to the comic book industry.

We’ve gathered a number of the biggest announcements in the list below as well as a video run-down in more detail in order to give a central location for your SDCC news. Please feel free to leave any comments below the article if we missed anything as we’re more than happy to continuely evolve this article to include as much relevant information as possible.

From the Movies coverage of SDCC we’ve decided to break it down by comic book affliation rather than production company:

Movies

• DC Comics
  • Arguably the biggest announcement of SDCC 2013 was that the follow-up to the 2012 Summer movie Man of Steel with be a Batman vs. Superman movie slated for 2015. Zack Synder and David Goyer from Man of Steel return to head the project, and while Henry Cavil will donning the Superman suit again there is debate to who will/should be playing the role of the dark knight.
  • A Flash Movie was announced, slated for 2016.
  • The Justice League Movie, long awaited, has been rumored to be pushed back to 2017.
• Marvel
  • X-Men: Days of Future Past, the follow-up X-Men: First Class, has been slated for 2014 and there were a number of cast members on the panel with a few characters confirmed to be making an appearance such as Bishop. A general plot has been discussed involving time travel and Wolverine.
  • Captain America: Winter Soldier (April 2014) continues to look amazing with more art and screen shots shown.
  • Guardians of the Galaxy will be making it’s way to the big screen August 2014 and while only a few concept images have been shown so far it has garnered some fan attention at SDCC so far.
  • The big news from Marvel at SDCC 2013 was the announcement of the Avengers sequel title: Avengers 2: Age of Ultron. While Hank Pym will have his own movie later, it has been confirmed Ant-Man won’t make an appearance in this movie and Ultron will instead has a new origin story – much to some peoples apprehension/glee.

• Vin Diesel will be returning to the role of Riddick in Sept 2013 in simply titled Riddick movie as well as a motion comic prequel.
• Many many more movies were discussed such as Kick Ass 2, 300: Rise of an Empire, Robocop, Godzilla, and Hunger Games: Catching Fire.

 TV

• Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. had it’s pilot episode shown, and while the mystery of Agent Coulson’s return was hinted at it wasn’t explained. Viewers reactions have been very positive so far. The show will air on ABC on September 24th.
• The cast of The Walking Dead gathered in a panel to discuss the next season, though not much details were discussed – rightfully so, surprise is a big draw.
• Game of Thrones had it’s own panel with a large number of characters who have met their end showing up to montage of death scenes.
• The Simpsons announced two crossovers: Family Guy and Futurama.

Video Games

• Batman Arkham Origins had a number of announcements and some confusion at SDCC, but in the end it summed up: Robin and Batgirl won’t be in the game and while Copperhead was announced the character has undergone a remake (that we like) along with a trailer.
• It was confirmed in Telltale’s The Walking Dead Season 2 that Clementine will return much to everyone’s joy.
• Lego Marvel Superheroes continues to expand the roster of announced characters and trailers!

Comics!!!

•  Image Comics celebrated the 10th Anniversary of The Walking Dead with the promise of even more violence and conflict to come.
• Dark Horse Comics announced a number of things at SDCC:
  • A new Terminator series from Stracynski
  • Gail Simone will pen a new Tomb Raider comic
  • Black Beetle will return in a second series
  • A new Halo comic set after the events of Halo 4 was announced
• The end of the Marvel’s Ultimates Universe might be coming as Galactus kicks off the “Cataclysm Event” in Marvel’s next arc.

Comic Station Issue #30 – July 24th 2013

We at Comic Station try to highlight new releases and other series many might otherwise overlook. We typically don’t report on long-standing series unless revolutionary. We add a little something extra in our Reviews and Recommendation section.

New Releases: We have what is probably our biggest publisher New Releases to Comic Station. The Hunger #1from Marvel kicks off with Galactus entering the Ultimate Universe. Superior Spider-man Team-Up #1 has Octavius meeting, and beating, many great heroes and villains alike. The only small publisher on this issue of Comic Station,The All New Fathom #1 from Aspen Comics is a good start for those looking to get into the Fathom series. We end with Hawkeye Annual from Marvel.

Review: Batman ’66 #1 from DC Comics and Superior Carnage #1 from Marvel are the two large publishers reviewed this week on Comic Station. Invincible #104 from Image Comics continue it’s run, while Watson and Holmes #1 from New Paradigm Studios takes old characters and reimagines them in modern New York.  Finally, Mass Effect: Foundation #1 from Dark Horse Comics contains a great twist that is great for fans and new readers.

Comic Station Issue #24 – June 12th 2013

We at Comic Station try to highlight new releases and other series many might otherwise overlook. We typically don’t report on long-standing series unless revolutionary. We add a little something extra in our Reviews and Recommendation section.

New Releases: Of the New Releases this week, we cover The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys #1 from Dark Horse Comics. Of course, with Man of Steel out, we had to cover Superman Unchained #1 from DC Comics. The final new release we covered this week on Comic Station was Bubble Gun #1 from Aspen Comics, a 10-for-10 title for only $1.

Review: Rather than a review this week on Comic Station, we highlight the remainder of our Philadelphia Comic Con 2013 coverage. Two interviews posted on Tuesday, one with Pat Shand from Zenescope and another with Kim Hutchinson, owner of Big Dog Ink. Finally, our interview with Hollaback Philly posts Wednesday at noon.

Recommendation: There’s no recommendation this week on Comic Station as Scott left us to go to see Man of Steel.

Comic Station Issue #13 - March 27th 2013

This issue of Comic Station brings a lot of great New Releases, with one outshining the rest as our hands-down must-buy recommendation.

New Releases: The biggest KNOWN issue coming out today on Comic Station is Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy #1. We reviewed Guardians of the Galaxy #0.1 on Comic Station Issue #10, and are glad to report this first true book continues the good work setup in the precursor. A favorite of ours, Injustice: Gods Among Us #3 proves yet again that this series is probably one of the best Superhero books currently available – right up against the big names. Vertigo released an anthology, with nine mini-issues called Timewarp that features some great art and big names like Gail Simone. The real surprise came in the form of Image Comic’s new series, East of West #1. We at Comic Station can’t say enough good things about this book. If you haven’t read this, go get it now before your store sells out – and they will.

Review: Continuing our love of the merging video games and comics genres we take a look at Dragon Age: Until We Sleep #1 on this issue of Comic Station. Until We Sleep takes place after the events of Dragon Age II and features the return of Allistar. Chaz King, the author of our review, wrote

“If you are interested in the characters or the fiction of the Dragon Age universe, you should give a thought to picking up Dragon Age: Until We Sleep, if only to keep an eye on Varric.”

Recommendation: We at Comic Station loved East of West so much that Scott wanted to go into a more detail of why we recommend it hands-down as a must-buy.

Comic Station Issue #12 - March 20th 2013

This issue of Comic Station brings some great New Releases as well as our first day-one comic book review.

New Releases: We had some technical difficulties on this issue of Comic Station, but that didn't stop us from bringing you the New Releases. First off is IDW's Memorial: Imaginary Friends. Beautifully drawn and all-ages appropriate story make this an interesting read, though maybe not a top seller. Marvel has two New Releases with X-Termination Part One taking place in the multi-verse timeline and brings together three X-Men teams against a new foe, while Deadpool #6 continues the irreverent and zany antics that have made this series a favorite on Comic Station. DC Comics gets their two in with Constantine #1, a fantastic introductory issue that doesn't waste time before jumping right into the action, and Justice League of America #2 which has a mediocre store sandwiched between two interesting mystery portions.

Review: The reviews this week on Comic Station come from our newest addition to our staff, Chaz King. Avatar The Last Airbender: The Search continues the story of Aang and brings back the old team. Chaz even brings a second review with the collection, The Massive Vol. 1: Black Pacific, a hot title that even has a movie deal in the works coming out.

Recommendation: Scott follows up with Dead Man's Party #2 from last week's Comic Station with yet more great things to say.

Comic Station Issue #11 – March 13th 2013

This issue of Comic Station brings some great New Releases as and a special St. Patrick’s Day Review.

New Releases: Two new Wolverine comics from Marvel Comics on this Comic Station make me a very happy reader!Ultimate Wolverine #1 and Wolverine #1 take two very different routes. Aliens vs. Parker #1 from BOOM! Publishers makes a surprising splash as with witty humor. We also return to a few favorites, Katana #2 and Star Wars #3, to see how they’ve been progressing since they were last on Comic Station.

Review: For a special St. Patrick’s Day review, we take a look at Zenescope’s Grimm Fairy Tale: St. Patrick’s Day Oneshot Special. All about the immorality of Greed and the curse of a leprechaun.

Recommendation: Scott shows off Dead Man’s Party, a photo-realistic black-and-white comic that looks fantastic. We look forward to seeing the writers of this comic on a future Comic Station Oneshot Interview.

Comic Station Issue #10 – March 6th 2013

The Comic Station videos bring the latest in New Releases, Reviews and Recommendations each week in Comic Books.

New Releases: The Avengers and X-men get more time together in a dystopian and bleak future in Age of Ultron #1 issue from Marvel Comics. Image Comics knows sex sells and hope it’s true that SEX #1 will sell. This one is NOT FOR KIDS! More in line for all-ages and kids, DC Comics has Ame-Comi Girls #1 where the characters of the DC Universe are in an all-female cast, even the traditionally male characters.

Review: We mention the Guardians of the Galaxy review, which we featured as a New Release on Comic Station Issue #9 last week. This week on Comic Station we look at Oni Press and their a great new Viking mystic in Helheim #1. A beautiful and gripping story that takes it beyond the typical Viking book.

Recommendation: Scott gives Red She-Hulk some love on this issue of Comic Station!

Special One-Shot: We had a special Comic Station One-Shot Interview with Jimmie Robinson, who wrote, drew and lettered Five Weapons #1 which we reviewed last week.

Comic Station Issue #9 – February 27th 2013

This issue of Comic Station brings some great New Releases as well as a special one-shot interview with Philadelphia Publisher, 215Ink.

New Releases: For this week we highlight three new number one issue releases on Comic Station #9. The big one,Gaurdians of the Galaxy #0.1 introduces a team that many younger readers, and a few older, might not recognize but will be having their own movie next year. Zenescope publishers have two new issues, Madness of Wonderland #1and The Jungle Book: The Last of the Species #1. Both titles feature Zenescope’s penchant for beautiful artwork and women. Not number ones, but worthy of attention Injustice Gods Among Us #2 and Young Avengers #2 were also shown on Comic Station Issue #9.

Review: Two reviews for the young teen readers. Amala’s Blade #0 from Dark Horse Comics has an assassin turned pirate, and Five Weapons #1 from Image Comics has an hitman-in-training.

Recommendation: Scott’s recommendation for this Comic Station is Warlord of Mars from Dynamite. This is certainly not your Disney’s John Carter.

Special: We had a special one-shot edition of Comic Station on publish on Sunday, with an interview of 215Ink who are publishing a special book: Ignition Anthology. This 300 page collection of over 80 writing/art teams will be releasing at the end of March.

Comic Station Issue #8 - February 20th 2013

This issue of Comic Station brings some great New Releases as well as our first day-one comic book review.

New Releases: The new Justice League of America #1 from DC Comics hit the shelves, along with all 52 variant covers featuring the States, Puerto Rico and Washington D.C. Marvel Now! has a new entry: Nova #1, which introduces The Guardians of the Galaxy to the newer Comic Station generation. IDW Comics has a new vampire comic aimed more for the teen generation, with Vitriol #1 hunting the undead. I also couldn’t help but give a shout-out to two more great comics out today, Savage Wolverine #2 and Wolverine Maxx #4.

Review: We had three shorter reviews this time, trying to offer more on this Comic Station Issue #8. DC Comic’s newKatana #1 introduces a old yet new character to The New 52. Image Comics seems to have another winner on their hands with Snapshot #1, and Dark Horse Comics rounds out the reviews with their much acclaimed Star Wars series with Star Wars #2.

Recommendation: Scott recommends my personal favorite Marvel Now! – and possibly all of Marvel – comics: Thor God of Thunder.

Comic Station Issue #7 – February 13th 2013

This issue of Comic Station brings some great New Releases as well as our first day-one comic book review.

New Releases: We’re warning filled in this issue of Comic Station. The Walking Dead: The Governor’s Special is one to beware of and Todd: The Ugliest Kid on Earth #2 doesn’t look too good. Luckily, there is a new series called Power Bureau #1 by Icon and a DC Comics carry-over, Katana #1, that has some promise. Another #2 actually steals the spotlight this Comic Station, with Star Wars #2 from Dark Horse Comics really shining through.

Review: For this issue of Comic Station we have two reviews, so they’re on the shorter size. Paul does a review of Emily and the Strangers #1  which was mentioned in Comic Station Issue # 5 and we have a review from a contributor, Chaz King, who posted his review of Son of Merlin #1.

Recommendation: A fan of the Uncanny X-men, Scott can’t help but recommend the Uncanny X-men #1 issue that continues the tale of the heroes and the aftermath of the X-men vs The Avengers series.

Comic Station Issue #1 – January 2nd 2013

For our first Issue of Comic Station we get right into things by setting up the segments: New Releases, Review and Recommendations.

New Releases: We chose three key additions to highlight from the line-up and even give our impressions and insight into a few series.  While not new, there’s also news that Hellboy in Hell #1 sold out, but don’t fret, there will be a reprint at the end of the month for those who missed it. As a preview for next week, we also mention a little bit about Brian Wood, the author of the new Star Wars #1 coming out next week.

Review: Our first review is one many readers might have missed – Alabaster Wolves by Dark Horse Comics. A young woman is tasked with hunting down monsters by her gaurdian angel, but we come into her life at a time when this routine has grown thin. This short five-issue run features some beautiful artwork by Steve Lieber and relate-able characters by Caitlin R. Kiernan. A full review will be coming to the website soon.

Recommendation: Our resident expert and owner of The Comic Station store, Scott Kaitz, kicks off strong with high praise for Batman: Death of the Family. See what he has to say about this New 52 series.

New York Comic Con: Comics, Video Games, and COSPLAY!

The New York Comic Con has been bringing people together to celebrate the work of comics and more since 2006. Since then they’ve expanded to include many other pop-cultural institutions such as Television, Anime, Manga, Video Games and even full feature length films. Due to the large overlap in the interests in 2010 the New York Anime Festival was joined with the New York Comic Con. From a respectable beginning with an estimated 33,000 attendees the comic convention has grown exponentially to take over the Javits Center with an attendance of over 105,000, according to the official New York Comic Con website.
