Comic Station Issue #24 – June 12th 2013

Comic Station #24 Feature
We at Comic Station try to highlight new releases and other series many might otherwise overlook. We typically don’t report on long-standing series unless revolutionary. We add a little something extra in our Reviews and Recommendation section.
New Releases: Of the New Releases this week, we cover The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys #1 from Dark Horse Comics. Of course, with Man of Steel out, we had to cover Superman Unchained #1 from DC Comics. The final new release we covered this week on Comic Station was Bubble Gun #1 from Aspen Comics, a 10-for-10 title for only $1.
Review: Rather than a review this week on Comic Station, we highlight the remainder of our Philadelphia Comic Con 2013 coverage. Two interviews posted on Tuesday, one with Pat Shand from Zenescope and another with Kim Hutchinson, owner of Big Dog Ink. Finally, our interview with Hollaback Philly posts Wednesday at noon.
Recommendation: There’s no recommendation this week on Comic Station as Scott left us to go to see Man of Steel.
Thank you and please leave comments here or on YouTube as we continue to evolve our coverage. For a listing of more New Releases we couldn’t get to, a list can be found below the video.
Hosts of the Comic Station:
Paul Neafsey (@PNeafsey)
Scott Kaitz (Owner of The Comic Station Store)
Video Editing: Paul Neafsey
Segment Music: Sean Weiland (Risen Phoenix Studios)

Screwed #1: Interview at Philadelphia Comic Con

Screwed Interview Feature
In addition to the major Unleashed event Zenescope has been introducing a number of new titles to their already numerous and popular publishing catalog. One of these new titles reimagines the classic Frankenstein tale in the way only Zenescope could do it. For this title, Screwed, they’ve brought together a talented cast with Keith Thomas, David Miller and the well-known Tyler Kirkham.
Anne awakes to find herself in a strange and dangerous place seemingly teeming with grotesque creatures. She knows she must run and fight, but what she doesn’t know might define her more. She’s a monster herself, a modern day Frankenstein monster. Tyler Kirkham describes Screwed as having, “…horror, action and some flat-out sick, twisted moments!” and goes on to say, “I always thought Zenescope would be a great fit for the story as it has a strong lead female role. I’m extremely excited for this series.” There’s plenty of mystery to be found, from who made her, why and why does she see monsters everywhere?
While at the Wizard World Philadelphia Comic Con I met with this creative team to discuss Screwed and the ideas behind their own creation brought to life.
More from Zenescope and Screwed will be coming soon on our weekly Comic Station issues

No Tomorrow: Exclusive First Interview at Phila. Comic Con

No Tomorrow Interview Feature
Zenescope, well known for their Grimm Fairy Tales series, has created a vast universe of characters and creatures. Being from Horsham PA I met up with them while at Wizard World Philadelphia Comic Con 2013. I had the chance to talk to them about a number of their titles and few interviews that will be coming soon. As a special opportunity I was offered the chance to conduct an interview about an upcoming comic book title that hasn't even been announced yet,No Tomorrow.
Raven Gregory has written for the titles: Grimm Fairy Tales, Dream Eater, Fly, various Wonderland tie-ins and more. As writer of No Tomorrow, Raven gives us some insight into what to expect from this new title coming out later this summer. Pat Shand also joined us for moral support with No Tommorrow.
Keep an eye out for more information on No Tomorrow from Zenescope to come soon

TenState Comic Book Kickstarter: Comic Station Interview

TenState Feature
Kickstarter has made a home with independent artist from Movies, Games and Comic Books. TenState is one such kickstarter comic book. The premise is what initially grabbed me, an independent comic in the setting of a reality TV show where 10 members of different races and creeds are brought together to see if they can stand together, or fall divided. The next thing to stand-out were the talents behind the comic.
The artist behind the unique cartoonish look of TenState is the well-known artist, Len Peralta. Peralta has made a name for himself with his popular previous kickstarters, the Geek-A-Week trading card sets. His artstyle is instantly recognizable to those who know his previous works and already have a cartoon-comic mixture that makes this a logical step. The writer, Tom Merritt, is a well-known technology podcaster with a number of shows, a book published and other technology works; however, the closest previous work has been co-host of Geek and Sundry with Felicia Day. To say I was interested in what could bring these two people together would be an understatement.
TenState Characters
Wonder where the inspiration came for some of the characters.
The plot behind TenState was something new, something a regular publisher might not have touched. It's an examination of the diversity of America, and possibility the world, born from observations of how people react in real life. With the help of Tom, TenState was made. An fake reality television show would be the setting to bring the ten people together. Each representing different segments of the population. The tensions that is inherent in the cohabitation of people so diverse is not the only driving force, there is something more behind the television program they are on as well. It's an intriquing idea, and a perfect example of the unique ideas that can be found thanks to Kickstarter.
Though their kickstater will be ending soon, on Wednesday April 10th 2013, I wanted to highlight TenState. While I hope to bring more attention to their I also encourage others to create or support independent comic book creators. To learn more about TenState, see our special Comic Station One-Shot interview with Tom and Len on their upcoming work below:

Transistor: Interview with Greg Kasavin - PAX East 2013

Not many developers could announce a game two days before PAX East and become arguably the most talked about title, but that’s just happened with Supergiant Games’ Transistor. After their success with their first title it’s not It’s not surprising that the developer of Bastion would garner such attention after their.  After their announcement of Transistor the accompanying trailer showed off the uniquely Supergiant Games art-style and amazing music that made Bastion so popular.
The Transistor booth at PAX East 2013 first on the agenda for many attendees, often completely circling their booth within minutes of the doors being opened. It’s not hard to see why, as not only was Transistor announced, but there was the chance to be one of the first ever to experience the playable demo.

State of Decay: Gameplay Interview - PAX East 2013

Since their first announcement at E3 in 2012 State of Decay from Undead Labs has managed to pique the interest of a community not satisfied with the current video game offerings for the zombie survival genre. Ears perked at the mention of a realistic sandbox zombie survival game. With everything mentioned and the promise of more to come the most head-turning announcement wasn’t the real-time building, realistic degradation of materials and social interactions, but that this impressive vision was coming to the Xbox Live Arcade.
For any developer, console or PC, the list of features in State of Decay would be daunting. Starting off with the barest of supplies – literally a branch to defend yourself – you’re set loose to survive. How to survive is completely up to you as you meet new characters and explore the world. Each new member might bring with them unique and useful attributes, as a doctor or mechanic, but they’re also a mouth to feed.

Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 3 Interview with Hiroshi Matsuyama (CEO)

At the 2012 New York Comic Con the floor was a combination of Comic, Anime, Manga and Video Game influences. Booths selling comics were feet from the latest anime series while video game trailers blared in the background. The show floor wasn’t the only place these various medias met. At the Namco Bandai section these same mixes have resulted in an anime video game that combines role-playing game (RPG) and fighting elements to create a unique hybrid of these genres.
