Comic Station Issue #33 – Aug 14th 2013

Comic Station #33 Feature
We at Comic Station try to highlight new releases and other series many might otherwise overlook. We typically don’t report on long-standing series unless revolutionary. We add a little something extra in our Reviews and Recommendation section.
New Releases: The big event this week on Comic Station and comic news is Marvel’s Infinity #1 (Part 1 of 6). We also follow up on Watson and Holmes #2 from New Paradigm Studios to see how the series is progressing. It Came! : Something is coming round for afternoon tea… and it isn’t the Vicar! from Titan Comics has to be the longest title ever on Comic Station. Finally, Dark Horse Comics continues the story of the UNSC, but this time centers around Sarah Palmer and the Spartan IV program in Halo: Initiation #1.
Review: Lots of comics have been reviewed this week on Comic Station. From last weeks New Releases we have: First we have Hunger #2 from Marvel progressing another big event in the Ultimates Universe.Superior Carnage #2, also from Marvel, should really be “Ultimate Wizard”. From Dark Horse Comics we have Skin Trade #2. New this week, the have three more titles, all from Dark Horse: Killjoys #3 is a post-apocalyptic bright spot compared to Resident Alien: Suicide Blonde #0. Blood Brothers #2 feels disjointed but a marked improvement over the first issue.

Comic Station Issue #32 – Aug 7th 2013

Comic Station #32 Feature
We at Comic Station try to highlight new releases and other series many might otherwise overlook. We typically don’t report on long-standing series unless revolutionary. We add a little something extra in our Review section.
New Releases: Trillium #1 from Vertigo kicks off this episode of Comic Station with an interesting gimmick. Buck Rogers #1 from Hermes Press renews a classic title. Dynamite also reboots a series, Lady Rawhide #1 which reminds us of a female Zorro in great artwork. Boom! starts a new line in the Robocop franchise with Robocop: Last Stand #1.
Review: We have a number of titles to review this week on Comic Station. Ghost: In the Smoke and Din and Tarzan: The Sunday Comics, both from Dark Horse, try their best with mild success. Black Bolt: Something Inhuman This Way Comes from Marvel repackages classic stories to bring the Inhumans back to public knowledge. Sidekick #1from Image tells the tale of a broken superhero sidekick who lost his partner and possibly his sanity.

Comic Station Issue #31 – July 31st 2013

Comic Station #31 Feature
We at Comic Station try to highlight new releases and other series many might otherwise overlook. We typically don’t report on long-standing series unless revolutionary. We add a little something extra in our Reviews and Recommendation section.
New Releases: This week on Comic Station starts off with a sequel to the soon-to-be-a-movie 2Guns with 3Guns #1from Boom Studios. The first issue of Captain Midnight #1 from Dark Horse Comics might be a better Captain America than the big-name guy’s current run. Collider #1 from Vertigo turns the world upside-down in this new physics-don’t-apply series. Skyward #1 from Action Lab Comics might look like a kids book, but it’s Young Adult and a great start to a new series from a small publisher. Admittedly a good surprise on this issue of Comic Station, Tom Strong and the Planet of Peril #1 from Vertigo is a humorous return to campy comics of old done right with great foreshadowing of things to come.
Reviews: Lido covers both reviews from Dark Horse this week for Comic Station. Gamma #1 is a “pokemon on LSD” while Lobster Johnson #1 will appeal to any pulp noir fans.

Comic Station Issue #26 – June 26th 2013

Comic Station Issue #26 Feature
We at Comic Station try to highlight new releases and other series many might otherwise overlook. We typically don’t report on long-standing series unless revolutionary. We add a little something extra in our Reviews and Recommendation section.
New Releases: It was a no-brainer kicking of Comic Station Issue #26 with Batman/Superman #1 from DC Comics. Image Comics continues their number one releases with Lazarus #1Uncanny #1 from Dynamite Comics takes a hustler, mystery and adds a supernatural twist.
Review: From our Man of Steel movie recap, Lido Giovacchini writes his first review for Comic Station with his review of Hoax Hunters: Case Files #1. A quirky group of supernatural hunters in strange and hilarious circumstances.
Recommendation: Scott recommends King Conan from Dark Horse Comics on this issue of Comic Station.

Comic Station Issue #18 – May 1st 2013

Comic Station Feature
We at Comic Station try to highlight new releases and other series many might otherwise overlook. We typically don't report on long-standing series unless revolutionary.
New Releases: This week on Comic Station the biggest publisher might not be the best. The Movement #1 from DC Comics features kids who use technology and super powers to enforce their territory. From Image Comics, Ten Grand #1 features a mob enforcer on a path of redemption and the chance to spend just five more minutes with his deceased girlfriend. As my favorite of this weeks Comic Station, Suicide Risk #1 from Boom Publishers follows a regular cop – maybe – who fights against supervillains in a world where heroes are scarce and powers can be bought for the right price.
Review: The Victories: Transhuman #1 from Dark Horse Comics takes the Comic Station to a realm of deeper meanings than most comics have now-a-days. From world-encompassing themes of humanity to personal struggles with self-image. Not for young readers, both due to the high level of issues delved into, but the vulgar language and occasional use of nudity. A thinking man's comic and one that takes a direction rarely seen.
Recommendation: Scott recommends Batman: The Killing Joke on this issue of Comic Station. An oldie, but an amazing read and still an essential part of the Batman mythos.

The Last of Us: American Dreams #1: Review (Comic)

For those who just can't wait for the upcoming Playstation title by Naughty Dogs Games - The Last of Us - the little bit of information from gameplay trailers has done little to feed an insatiable hunger for more. More of the great graphics, action adventure and story. On the contrary  the more they show the more questions arise and the more June 14th can't get here soon enough. To help quell some of this hunger Naughty Dog has teamed up with Dark Horse Comics to brings us a tantalizing glimpse into this postapocalyptic world . In The Last of Us: An American Dream #1 we are treated to the official comics-exclusive prequel to one of the most anticipated games of the year.

Set nineteen years after the fungal parasite outbreak infected the majority of the world population, resulting in humanity fighting for it's survival in camps. Ellie was born into one of these camps, located in Boston, where she's known nothing but the devastated world she was raised in. As could be expected, having been taken to the brink of extinction, the walled off city has taken to a more militaristic  society where orphans are sent to military prep school upon their thirteenth birthday. The Last of Us: American Dreams opens on the day Ellie is taken to this prep school.

The Last of Us Comic Image1
Not exactly a friendly place, but pay attention to small details.
On her way to her new school we get the first glimpse into the walled city that Ellie calls home. It's not a bright or friendly place. Without even saying as word Faith Erin Hicks, the artist, conveys a myriad of emotions and reactions by Ellie that also offer us our first look into the kind of person Ellie is. There are obvious overtures as well as subtle clues at things to come that add depth to the comic as well as hint at elements to come when The Last of Us game comes out. While they hint, they don't spoil anything yet remain tantalizing.
The artwork is not a style that I typically favor, but Hicks's use of the colors and emotional conveyance elevates the style to my admiration. It might also be fitting as trying to copy the graphics of the games could be disheartening. Such a divergent art choice from the game makes sense.
Throughout The Last of Us: American Dreams the story focuses on Ellie, not just thematically, but emotionally and truly insightful. Faith Erin Hicks pulls double duty, working with Neil Druckman as co-authors of this book. There's hardly a wasted page or even scene for that matter that doesn't show Ellie, the world she lives in and how she reacts to it.

Comic Station Issue #10 – March 6th 2013

The Comic Station videos bring the latest in New Releases, Reviews and Recommendations each week in Comic Books.
New Releases: The Avengers and X-men get more time together in a dystopian and bleak future in Age of Ultron #1 issue from Marvel Comics. Image Comics knows sex sells and hope it’s true that SEX #1 will sell. This one is NOT FOR KIDS! More in line for all-ages and kids, DC Comics has Ame-Comi Girls #1 where the characters of the DC Universe are in an all-female cast, even the traditionally male characters.
Review: We mention the Guardians of the Galaxy review, which we featured as a New Release on Comic Station Issue #9 last week. This week on Comic Station we look at Oni Press and their a great new Viking mystic in Helheim #1. A beautiful and gripping story that takes it beyond the typical Viking book.
Recommendation: Scott gives Red She-Hulk some love on this issue of Comic Station!
Special One-Shot: We had a special Comic Station One-Shot Interview with Jimmie Robinson, who wrote, drew and lettered Five Weapons #1 which we reviewed last week.
